Three years after their third World Series victory in 1983, the Orioles completely collapsed. And on the fateful night when the serious losing began, amazingly, they hit two grand slams.
I was an usher in Section 38 that year. I remember Curt Anderson, former WBAL anchor, current city councilman and future Maryland delegate shake my hand on the way out. He left in the 7th, saying "You sure put on a good show here." I thanked him even though I had nothing to do with the grand slams. Neither of us knew at the time that we reached the high-water mark of the late 80's.
I remember that game well. The Orioles' collapse that followed was even a bigger surprise.
PS Today’s 24-2 loss to the Reds could be another of those pivotal games. We’d better get some pitching or we’re dead.
No doubt about that!
I’ll never forget the SI cover with Billy Ripken, head on bat, and the headline “O-21”.

Great story, Russ. I think a lot of people were sure that game was over.
Never get tired of hearing people say what a wonderful writer you are John! You're an Icon!
Thank you, Paige. Your kind words are much appreciated.
